Eyelid Lifts Break Down Into Upper & Lower
Upper Eyelid Sugery
Upper eyelid surgery, also known as an “upper blepharoplasty,” is a surgical procedure that focuses on the various aesthetic concerns unique to the upper eyes. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin, muscle and fat from the upper eyelids, resulting in a more rested and youthful appearance.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery, or the “lower blepharoplasty,” encompasses a range of surgical techniques designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the lower eyelids. This procedure focuses on the removal of excess skin and fat to diminish lower eyelid wrinkles, address skin redundancy and alleviate fat bulges.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) removes excess eyelid skin from above and/or below the eye. Skin loses elasticity with age. When combined with gravity, this causes the skin to collect and fold. Lack of elasticity in the eyelids may appear droopy or create dark circles. Removing the skin creates a much more lifted and youthful appearance. This is a safe procedure that will not risk your sight — in fact, it often improves it!
Additional Details About The Procedure
Dr. Sieffert performs the eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) procedure on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. Incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper lids and beneath the lash line in the lower lids.
In some cases, excess fat and skin are removed; in others, fat is rearranged or added to fill in hollow spaces. If only fat adjustments are necessary for the lower lids, they may be made through an incision inside the lids that are totally hidden with no external incision or scar (transconjunctival blepharoplasty).
-
There are two different types of eyelid surgery — upper and lower blepharoplasties. The loss of skin elasticity can impact both the upper and lower eyelids. Drooping of the upper eyelids ages the face, and in some cases, decreases your range of vision. Sagging lower eyelids will cause bags under the eyes which makes you look tired. Upper and lower eyelid surgeries are performed in similar ways, and your surgeon will discuss the differences in recovery.

Out of about 7,700 reviews on RealSelf.com, 94% of patients find the blepharoplasty is worth it! At first glance, this procedure may sound a little scary since it addresses such a sensitive area. However, blepharoplasty is a very safe and straightforward procedure, and recovery may be easier than you expect.
Dr. Sieffert will help you through the whole process, and ultimately, help you achieve the results you desire.

Blepharoplasty is a great way to enhance your eyes, but sometimes your results may be reached by a combination of treatments. Sometimes it can be hard to tell what part of the face is causing the deflated or hollowed appearance. For example, droopiness of the eyelids may originate from the eyebrows or forehead rather than just the eyelids.
Eyebrow lifts, mini facelifts and facelifts are all options that can be combined with an eyelid lift to help you get that lifted look. Based on your goals and physical anatomy, Dr. Sieffert will explain each procedure along with the pros and cons of each for you to make your informed decision.
We also offer a variety of non-surgical and aesthetic treatments to further brighten the eye area to give you a more youthful look and enhance your results.

Recovery is just about the same for both upper and lower blepharoplasty. The main difference is that upper eyelid surgeries involve a suture removal in the office 1 week after the procedure. Initial mild discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Bruising, swelling and sensitivity to light may last a week or two. Eye makeup can be used after sutures are removed and contact lenses can be worn whenever comfortable.
-
An upper eyelid lift can be helpful if you have excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision, or if you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease due to puffy fat pouches. If your face seems tired or aged because of dark circles or puffy fat in the lower lids, then a lower eyelid lift will provide a more youthful and rested appearance.
